Tonhalle, St. Gallen, Switzerland

Tonhalle St. Gallen, Switzerland. The seating in the auditorium of this music and theatre venue in St. Gallen was extremely worn and urgently in need of an overhaul. Girsberger renovated a total of 891 fold-down seats. The frames were sand-blasted and smoothed, then re-varnished, the seats and backs were reupholstered with high-quality flame-retardant foam and fabric covers, and the folding mechanisms were overhauled. As part of the refurbishment Girsberger added value in terms of acoustics by placing a layer of steel wool onto the back panels and seat panels and then covering this with finely perforated sheet metal before upholstering them so that sound is absorbed in a similar way whether or not there is an audience in the auditorium, thus leaving the acoustics unchanged. Around 420 seats were renovated during the 7-week summer recess and the rest in batches at regular intervals during the normal timetable.

KKL Luzern,
Switzerland

KKL Luzern, Switzerland

KKL Luzern, Switzerland. Designed by the architect Jean Nouvel and constructed between 1995 and 1998, the KKL Lucerne is one of the most spectacular buildings in Switzerland. After almost two decades of intense use, the seat upholstery in the concert hall was showing clear signs of wear. The pivot bearings on the folding seats were also making disruptive noises. To restore its smart appearance, the usual standards of comfort and smooth functioning, Girsberger was asked to overhaul the entire seating. The engineers and specialists from Girsberger came up with a new pivot mechanism and a completely new seat padding structure. The seat and backrest upholstery were prefabricated in the factory to guarantee quick replacement on site. The 1,898 seats were reupholstered in five stages, each with two shifts and without affecting the regular operations of the KKL.

Aula Cher, Sarnen, Switzerland. The Aula Cher hall in the municipality of Sarnen has space for more than 700 people. After years of use, its flexible concert and banquet seating, consisting of 475 four-legged chairs and 244 built-in fold-up chairs from well-known brand Castelli, were in need of refurbishment. Girsberger dismantled the solid chairs and took all the seating furniture back to its factory, where the worn-out covers and sagging foam padding were removed completely, properly disposed of, and re-upholstered and covered with new robust materials. Any broken seat boards, frame parts or plastic tubes were replaced with original parts. New coupling elements and seat numbering holders were also delivered and fitted. The extensive overhaul of the high-quality, reliable Castelli seating was done during the summer break within a period of five weeks.

Zentrum Schlossmatt, Burgdorf, Switzerland

Zentrum Schlossmatt, Burgdorf, Switzerland. After years of use, the saggy upholstery, battered chair frames and scratched table tops made the high-quality furniture at the Zentrum Schlossmatt care home in Burgdorf unsightly. Moreover, the furniture no longer suited the colours of the new interior design concept. Rather than simply buying new furniture to replace it, the managers chose to go down the more sustainable route of reconditioning. Girsberger sandblasted, varnished and re-upholstered a total of 164 chairs. The colours of the beech and oak frames were also harmonized. The existing solid cast-iron table bases were powder-coated and fitted with new custom-made tops.

Protestant church, Steckborn, SwitzerlandIn 2015, the protestant church in Steckborn, built between 1766 and 1768, was completely renovated and refurbished, first outside, then inside. The somewhat time-worn solid ash pews were also to be restored to their former glory. Girsberger removed all twenty pews and took them to its manufacturing site in Bützberg, where they were stored and completely overhauled during the 8-month period required to finish refurbishing the building interior. First, the carpenters drilled holes into the pews to accommodate the new heating pipes. They then optimized the pew-back book racks by removing the edging to make it easier to slide the books into the racks. Finally, the six-metre-long pews were sand blasted and smoothed, then three coats of varnish were applied. Girsberger delivered the newly restored pews punctually in advance of the celebration service marking the end of the renovation work.

Tharad care centre, Derendingen, SwitzerlandThe Tharad care centre, which has over eighty rooms, a dementia care residential unit and a restaurant open to the public, was recently renovated and extended. During the refurbishment, the materials and colours inside the existing building were updated to match those in the new building. The existing chairs did not fit into the new colour concept, the wood was damaged and the seats sagged. However, as they were high quality furniture items, Girsberger overhauled and refurbished them rather than replacing them. First, a sample chair was sand blasted, given three coats of varnish, then restuffed and reupholstered. Pleased with the result, the care centre gave the go-ahead for a total of 277 ordinary chairs and 34 high-back chairs to be refurbished in the same way. Girsberger provided replacement chairs while the work was carried out.

Girsberger checked the stability of each individual chair, reglueing sections as required. Then a total of 82 chairs were sanded and three coats of hard-wearing matt black varnish applied. All the seats were reupholstered with new foam and high-quality natural leather. Finally, to make the chairs as easy to move as possible for guests, Teflon floor gliders were fixed to the feet.

L'Escale residential and care home for the elderly, La Chaux-de-Fonds, SwitzerlandL'Escale residential and care home in the centre of La Chaux-de-Fonds provides a spacious living environment for around forty elderly persons. The meeting point and central hub of the home is a large dining room, where the tables and chairs were extremely well used. The varnish on the wooden frames had been worn off in places, while the legs of the tables and chairs were dented and scratched. Some of the seats had begun to sag, and the management of the home wanted to update the upholstery colours. After a successful trial refurbishment of one chair, Girsberger spent just four weeks overhauling more than eighty upholstered chairs. The frames were sand blasted and smoothed, then three coats of varnish were applied. Our upholstery specialists replaced the foam in the seat pads and backrests and covered them with disinfectant-resistant faux leather. Following this, the tables were refurbished. Girsberger provided replacement chairs and tables while the work was carried out.

Concert Hall Bad Salzuflen, Germany. The town of Bad Salzuflen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has subjected its concert hall, built in 1963, to a complete renovation. The building, located in the spa gardens, is under historical preservation protection and is considered to be an outstanding example of spa architecture in the nineteen sixties. After the decision against installing new seats for aesthetic and ecological reasons, it became necessary to find means of refurbishing the old and worn audience seats. Girsberger was able to provide the necessary capacity and know-how. At Girsberger's production plant in the German town of Endingen, the old covers and the foam padding were removed, sorted and disposed of, new foam padding was glued to the seats, the covers were cut and sewn, and the seats received their new upholstery. This all took place within a period of two months. The seats were returned and remounted promptly in time for the opening of the season on May 21, 2010.

Dählhölzli Zoo restaurant, Berne, SwitzerlandAfter years of continuous use, the furniture in the restaurant at Berne's popular Dählhölzli Zoo was showing serious signs of wear and tear. Although the chairs had reached the end of their useful life and were irreparably damaged, the solid beech tables were suitable for complete refurbishment. In several stages the specialists at Girsberger reglued and sandblasted the table frames and machine sanded the tabletops. Finally, the tables, which were originally stained brown, were coated with a durable and highly UV resistant varnish. Having renovated a total of 47 tables including the regulars' table, Girsberger then supplied new solid wood chairs to complete the look.

Parktheater Grenchen, Switzerland.  At the grand opening of the Parktheater Grenchen in the Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland in 1955, architect Ernst Gisel from Zurich proclaimed that there was no other building in Switzerland quite like it. In constructing this multipurpose building, which followed thirty years of planning, Mr Gisel said that Grenchen had entered totally new territory. In 2009, the Parktheater, a historic-cultural monument, became a listed building. It has since undergone careful renovation in close collaboration with the cantonal preservation authorities and Grenchen’s municipal planning department. Part of the process involved renovating and repainting the theatre’s 700 wooden chairs in five phases. The chairs are the classic Moser 1-250 model designed by Werner Max Moser in 1931. The chairs consist of a seat frame, back and legs made of shaped solid wood and are still produced today, as back then, by Horgenglarus furniture factory in Glarus. Parallel to the overhaul of the chairs, Girsberger produced and delivered eighty new, matching tables.

The seats and backrests were re-upholstered and covered with a faux leather fabric.

Egghölzli Apartments for senior citizens, Berne, Switzerland.  When the time came to replace the chairs in the dining room of the Egghölzli apartments for senior citizens in Berne, Girsberger proposed refurbishing the existing furniture rather than replacing it. As a test, Girsberger restored two chairs. The response was positive, and the cost was much lower compared with the option of replacing all the chairs, so Girsberger transported all 170 chairs to its factory, tested them for stability, reglued the ones that needed mending, and repainted, stuffed and upholstered them. The 10-metre long seat bench from the dining room was also restuffed and recovered. Because there was a shortage of chairs, Girsberger also produced 20 new ones based on the same model.
